Note: This camera needs an external 12V DC power source with an output of at least 3 amps. This is necessary to power both the TEC cooler and the camera's connection to your computer. If you only connect the USB 3.0 cable to your computer or ASIAir, the camera won't work. You can use ZWO’s 12V DC power supply or an external battery (sold separately).
- Full-Frame Sensor: The ASI2400MC Pro has a 24-megapixel, back-illuminated sensor. This is ideal for capturing high-quality, color images of deep-sky objects.
- High Dynamic Range: Its full well depth of 100ke allows for a higher dynamic range. This results in brighter stars and detailed images with low noise, even on long exposures.
- Less Noise With TEC Cooling: A two-stage thermoelectric cooler keeps the sensor cool, reducing dark current and noise.
- Dew Heater: Its 5W dew heater helps prevent condensation on the camera window. This is ideal for humid conditions.
- Fast Data Transfer: It uses USB 3.0 with a 256MB buffer for fast and stable image transfer. This helps minimize data loss and amp glow from slow transfer speeds.
ZWO ASI2400MC Pro: Astronomy Camera With a Sony Full-Frame IMX410 Sensor
The ZWO ASI2400MC Pro is a major advance in CMOS astronomy cameras.
This ZWO color camera uses Sony's back-illuminated IMX410 sensor and features a 36mm x 24mm full-frame sensor with 24 megapixels. It has 5.94μm pixels, a 100ke full-well depth, and offers high dynamic range.
With ultra-low readout noise of 1.1e and zero amp glow, it’s perfect for capturing stunning deep-sky images. Its plug-and-play functionality makes it ideal for astrophotographers of all experience levels.
Check out AstroBackyard’s in-depth review of the ASI2400MC Pro.
Large Pixel Size for Increased Light Sensitivity
Larger pixels are great for astrophotography because they capture more light. This is crucial when imaging faint objects like distant galaxies, nebulae, and other deep-sky targets.
The 5.94μm pixels in the ASI2400MC Pro gather more photons, boosting the signal-to-noise ratio. This leads to brighter, clearer images with less noise, even in low light or long exposures. Larger pixels also improve sensitivity, making it easier to capture fine details that smaller pixels might miss.
Back-Illuminated Sensor for Enhanced Light Capture
The camera's 36mm x 24mm IMX410 CMOS sensor features a back-illuminated design, improving its light capturing ability. Unlike older front-illuminated sensors, where wiring blocks some light, this design places the circuitry behind the light-sensitive surface.
This boosts quantum efficiency to nearly 80%, allowing more light to reach each pixel for clearer, sharper images. The IMX410 also offers the usual CMOS benefits, like low power consumption and high-speed performance.
High Dynamic Range, Large Full-Well Capacity and Low Readout Noise
The ASI2400MC Pro has a full-well depth of 100ke, providing an ultra-high dynamic range of up to 14 stops. This is over 130% higher than the ZWO ASI128MC Pro, despite their similar pixel sizes.
The large well depth allows brighter stars to be captured without overexposure while keeping excellent color gradation. In HCG (high gain) mode, readout noise drops to just 1.1e without affecting dynamic range, making your images sharper and more detailed.
Zero Amp Glow for Clean Long Exposures
Traditional CMOS sensors can produce a faint infrared light during long exposures, often seen as amp glow in the corners of images. The ASI2400MC Pro eliminates this issue with zero amp-glow circuitry. This ensures your images stay clean and free of unwanted light, even at high gain settings.
Anti-Dew Design
The ASI2400MC Pro has with a polyimide dew heater around the camera window. This helps combat condensation in humid environments. This 5W heater can be turned off through the camera’s software to conserve power when not in use.
Two-Stage TEC Cooling for Low Sensor Noise
The camera uses two-stage thermoelectric cooling (TEC). This can reduce the sensor temperature by up to 35°C below the ambient temperature. It helps reduce dark current and sensor noise, even during long exposures.
The camera’s dark current suppression technology further reduces noise. When cooled to -20°C, dark current is as low as 0.00035e/s/pixel, making it negligible. The TEC cooler requires a 12V external power supply (not included), and cannot be powered by the ZWO ASIAir-Plus or Pro.
Fast and Reliable Data Transfer
The ASI2400MC Pro uses a USB 3.0 interface for fast data transfer, along with 256MB (2Gb) of DDR3 memory for secure image transfer. This buffer prevents frame drops during long exposures and reduces the risk of amp glow from slow data transfers.
The ASI2400MC Pro is perfect for deep-sky astrophotography, with high dynamic range, zero amp glow, and efficient cooling. Whether you're a beginner or experienced user, this camera helps you capture stunning, detailed views of the night sky.
